What is a school physical?

Your child might need a school physical to ensure they’re healthy enough to participate in school activities and up-to-date with their vaccines. The highly trained AFM Healthcare team offers a combined 50 years of health care experience, including school and sports physicals.

What happens during a school physical?

During a school physical, your child’s provider often completes the following actions:

Vital sign check

The AFM Healthcare team screens your child for disease risk factors by checking their weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and other vital signs.

Medical history review

Your child’s provider asks questions about their personal and family medical histories, including medications they take, past diagnoses, and symptoms if they have any.

Physical examination

During a comprehensive physical examination, AFM Healthcare providers examine your child’s eyes, ears, throat, breathing, reflexes, heartbeat, limbs, and more to look for signs of an illness or disease.

Screening tests

Your provider can complete screening tests to evaluate your child’s overall health and wellness. They offer developmental screening, vision and hearing tests, diabetes screening, hormone tests, blood tests, allergy and asthma testing, heart function tests, and more.

What if my child has a health problem?

If your child has a health problem requiring treatment, their provider can help to relieve symptoms, restore your child’s quality of life, and prevent serious medical complications.

They might recommend vaccines, prescription medications, an inhaler, dietary supplements, nutrition counseling for healthy weight management, further diagnostic testing, or a specialist referral.

What happens after a school physical?

If the school physical finds your child to be in good health, their provider can sign off on the required school physical forms. You get a copy to take with you or send to your child’s school administrators as needed.

If your child is ill and requires treatment, such as prescription antibiotics, their doctor can send a note stating when it’s safe to return to school.

If your child is due for a school physical or annual physical examination, you can trust the experienced AFM Healthcare team with their care. Call the office to schedule an appointment, or book one online today.
