request an appointmentWhat is an EKG?
Electrical signals in your heart control and regulate your heartbeat. At AFM Healthcare, the doctors might perform an electrocardiogram (EKG) to record and measure these signals, so they monitor your heart’s functioning.
An EKG checks your heart for such conditions as:
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Narrowed or blocked arteries
An EKG can also test the efficacy of any current treatments you might have, such as a pacemaker.
Should I get an EKG?
The team at AFM Healthcare recommends you get an EKG if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Heart palpitations
- Racing pulse
- Ongoing dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Chronic fatigue
An EKG can confirm or eliminate factors toward the correct diagnosis and the most accurate treatment for your condition.
How is an EKG performed?
You don’t feel any pain during an EKG. This noninvasive, painless procedure allows you to rest comfortably during the test.
Your doctor places as many as 12 electrode sensors on your chest and limbs to record the electrical signals that cause your heart to beat. Your results are recorded on a graph so your doctor can see the rhythm of your heartbeat.
The procedure lasts for only a few minutes, but you need to stay still during the test. Once you’re finished, your doctor can show you the results and discuss them with you.
Is an EKG safe?
An EKG poses no risk to your health. The removal of the electrodes that are taped on your skin might cause some minor discomfort. Afterward, you can return to your daily routine. You don’t need any downtime because the test doesn’t require recovery.
Your doctor looks for these and other issues:
- Abnormal heart rate
- Irregular heartbeat
- Evidence of a previous or current heart attack
- Inadequate amount of blood and oxygen getting to your heart
- Enlargement of the heart and surrounding areas.
If the test identifies an issue with your heart, your doctor may refer you to a specialist for additional evaluation.
